The checklist
- Thermostat: make sure it's set to Cool, the temperature is set below the room temperature, and the batteries aren't dead.
- Breakers: most systems have two, one for the indoor unit and one for the outdoor unit. If one is tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call.
- Air filter: a clogged filter can cut cooling dramatically. Replace it if you can't see light through it.
- Outdoor unit: clear away grass, leaves, and anything stacked against it. It needs room to breathe.
- Outdoor disconnect: the gray box on the wall near the outdoor unit should be switched on or have its pull-out block in place.
- Drain line: many systems have a safety switch that shuts off cooling when the condensate drain backs up. Water in the drain pan is a clue.
Time to call a technician if
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn't spin
- You see ice on the lines or indoor unit
- A breaker trips again after you reset it
- You smell burning or hear grinding or squealing
- It still blows warm air after every check above
Why these problems happen in East Texas
Long, hot summers keep systems running for hours at a time. Capacitors, contactors and fan motors wear out fastest under that load, and they're among the most common repairs we make.
