Seven signs your electrical panel needs replacing

Your electrical panel sends power to every circuit in your home or shop. When it's worn out or too small, it can cause nuisance trips, damage equipment, or become a fire risk.

Warning signs

  • Breakers trip often during normal use
  • The panel cover feels warm, or you see scorch marks
  • Buzzing, crackling, or a burning smell near the panel
  • Rust or water stains inside or on the panel
  • You still have a fuse box
  • There's no room left for new breakers
  • You're adding central air, a shop, a well pump, an EV charger, or a large appliance

Panels worth a closer look

Some older panel brands, such as Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) and Zinsco, have a history of breakers that may not trip when they should. If you have one, have a licensed electrician inspect it.

What a replacement involves

We size the new panel for what you run now and what you plan to add, install it with new breakers, and coordinate with the utility if the service itself needs to change. You'll know the scope and price before work begins.

Don't wait on these

A burning smell, sparks, or a panel that's hot to the touch needs attention right away. Turn off the main breaker if you can do so safely, and call a licensed electrician.
